The devastating floods that hit Timor-Leste in April have killed at least 42 people, with many others missing.
Alola Foundation’s CEO Maria Guterres has let us know that thousands of homes have been affected, leaving countless people homeless, without belongings, food or water. Women and children escaping the floods are overwhelming local shelters where they are seeking food, clothes and basic hygiene.
This comes on top of the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Timor-Leste. Dili was already in a dire situation under an extended lockdown with people’s anxiety high as the first COVID-19 death was recently recorded. The crammed shelters are struggling to maintain social distancing and basic hygiene, to prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases among those who have lost their homes and belongings. The need for help is immediate and critical.
Fundasaun Alola is standing ready.
Alola Australia seeks your support so that our sister organisation, Fundasaun Alola, can secure and distribute food, clean water, clothing and hygiene kits to the women and children in need now.
